to wool or would like to have cruelty-free fibers, cotton is one
alternative. Cotton is both available in organic as well inorganic
variety. In cotton rugs industry larger scraps are woven into rugs.
Cotton, easily available raw material for rugs, is well cultivated
crop in many parts of world. Cotton accounts for 48% of the total
fiber consumption worldwide.
Cotton has advantage in making rugs in comparison to traditional
wool and synthetic fibers, namely cotton does not melt, cotton has
no glass transition temperature, cotton has little crimp.
Rugs made of Cotton, provide a wide range of simple yet elegant
country designs with animal and beach themes. Woven with cotton
in a luxurious hand finished tufted rug. There are numerous houses
bringing out continuous traditional hand-tufted wool rugs with a
modern twist.
Traditional
rugs are pile less cotton woven in a single colour, with or without
a contrast border or in stripes of different colours and varying
thickness. Chain stitched rugs are made on a hessian base with an
additional lining of gunny sack cloth. Skillfully stitched rugs
serve as floor coverings, wall decorations and mattresses. They
are used as horse and camel saddles and wall hangings besides traditional
floor coverings.
